The retina is essential to your vision, and diseases and conditions affecting the retina can lead to permanent blindness.
People with high blood pressure or other diseases affecting the arteries are more likely to develop retinal vascular disease, which includes different disorders affecting the blood vessels or arteries inside the eye. Similar to vascular disease that causes blood clots in other parts of the body, retinal vascular disease can lead to clots inside the eye.
When cells inside the retina (the light sensitive tissue at the back of your eye) begin to die, the process is known as retinal degeneration, including Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). This can result from several causes, including genetic disorders, aging, or cancer and can lead to blindness.
